In this article we decided to write about a common problem that all horse owners seem to have is the fact their horses are spooky or have the tendency to become spooky in some specific situations. Spooky in horses dictionary means that a horse is nervous and anxious and is afraid that something bad is gonna happen to him.
All people who own or want to own a horse in the near future have to have in mind that understanding a horse and his needs are absolutely the most important things they need to work on. Just like humans, horses have their own thoughts and feelings, who are different from ours.
In order for us to understand them, we have to put ourselves in our horses’ shoes and get a feel of how their mind works. Below we have made a list with the most common things all the spooky horses do, that we’re pretty sure to have happened at least once in every horse owner’s daily life.
1. Horses are afraid to ride on some particularly roads: While you are out hacking with your horse, you try to avoid barking dogs, white gates or even funny-looking edges because apparently, these specific things get him nervous. Just to be completely sure that he is gonna be fine and there is not gonna be any surprise, you check the rode in your own first.
2. Dealing with certain objects your horse finds scary: You have compiled a list with things that your horse dislikes. Different objects like cars, bicycles or tables are surprisingly acceptable for your horse whilst other objects like umbrellas or plastic bags scare the hell out of them. We still don’t understand what comes to their minds when they choose if an object is acceptable or not.
3. Your horse needs to approve your whole daily clothes whether you like it or not: Every time you buy a new item of clothing, it is firstly scanned by your horse because he makes sure if it is a ‘scary’ or ‘non-scary item’. For some reason, jackets must not make a sound when you rub them or be flappy, their zips must not be jangly and lastly, boots must not have Hook and loop fasteners. In addition to these things when horses see colors with a contrasting difference, it makes them uncomfortable because they don’t perceive it like you and me.
4. Horse owners find themselves in different situations where they put their horses’ thoughts first, even though their horse may not be related to them. For example: Have you ever found yourself driving in your car and be very careful avoiding things that your horse gets spooky about, only to remember that you are not on horseback and your horse is very safe at the barn? I think most of the horse owners have.
5. Riding other people’s horses is just not the same thing. Even though you have tried to ride your friend’s well-behaved horse, you have found the experience a little bit boring. Your horse may be a spooky horse but at the end of the day, you now know everything about each other and nothing compares to the bond that you two have.
Since we are here we also wanted to give you some helpful advice on how to behave with your spooky horse and make both your horses’ life and yours easier. Horses have a lot of instincts and one of the most important instincts is thought to be the flight instinct. Since the beginning of history, horses have tried to get away from predators, so remember that anytime you try to control when he wants to flee he will react with his natural instinct. In his mind, he is trying to save his life and is struggling with his fears. He needs his owner to be there with him so he can gain his confidence back.
It is very important to develop good communication with your horse. You have to talk to him in every case when you see that he is feeling anxious and he needs reassurance from you. A good exercise that can help a lot when your horse is nervous is also giving him a rub on his neck. Just always keep in mind that all the early work in your new surroundings needs to be pressure-free, so your horse learns that there’s nothing to worry about and that you will be with him through every step he takes.
