A horse’s owner decided to cover him with a blanket on a cold winter day in Minnesota. But as we can see in the video below, he decided it was better to take it off and completely destroy it. He may be stubborn but he is adorable! He simply thinks that he looks too good to wear a blanket so better without it. It must be said that blanketing your horse is a very debated topic.
Some are passionate about having their horses wear a blanket in the winter, just as some are passionate about letting horses be horses, and never have their horses wear a blanket. Then there are those, that are stuck between the two. Those who have their horses wear blankets, depending on the weather, and when the weather is good, no blankets are often necessary.
If you think that is absolutely necessary for all horses to wear a blanket, then you are wrong. Horses develop their own blanket–a haircoat that is dense enough to endure the coldest days of winter. It’s an adaptable covering that levels against or advances above the skin as the horse grows more heated or colder.
But there are some particular circumstances which require blanking for some types of horses. Blanketing is required for racing horses who are routinely clipped during colder weather to maintain a smooth appearance, decrease sweating, reduce the cooling-out time and speed drying after harsh workouts.
Old horses whose tastes and metabolism may not produce enough fuel to keep meat on their bones and their inner “furnaces” stoked need shelter or blanketing during cold weather.
