A ruthless blizzard that produced hurricane-force winds and more than 10 feet of snow happened in Iceland.
The storm was very risky to anyone left outside, including animals. Magnús’, one of the farmers living there, saw a herd of horses caught in the worst of the storm, and only because of him they managed to save their lives.
Winters are usually very cold and harsh, in Iceland but Magnús didn’t assume that this kind of storm to drop 10 feet under. Although the horses are habitual to cold weather, they couldn’t handle the sudden onrush of deep snow.
His gut feeling told him he needed to check on his horses but just when he got there, looking closely, Magnsús found his herd of horses up to their necks in snow. They were freezing, couldn’t move and if they weren’t pulled out quickly, they would die.
One by one, Magnús dug his horses out of the deep snow. It was hard work, and also a dangerous job. It took time, but the skilled horse owner freed his horses and watched as they gradually made their way to the barn for safety.
It was a scary experience, but all of Magnús’ horses made it out of the snow successfully.
No horses were injured during the study, but they demanded immediate attention to warm them up and oppose the frostbite. Thankfully they are all survivors, and they’ll stay safely in their barn until the snow melts and the weather tranquilize.
We are very happy that they are in good condition.
