The continuous advancement of the world has been also associated with a lot of negative effects on the environment, that’s why recently a lot of developed countries are things of using energy from renewable resources because they are believed to be less problematic for the environment and at some point in time, they can prevent phenomenons like global warming.
The Helsinki International Horse Show literally runs on horsepower, as their electricity source is produced from horse manure. The manure was filmed being collected in the Finnish capital on Saturday, as riders and their horses were warming up. Charging stations powered by poo were also on show. Anssi Paalanen, the vice-president of Fortum HorsePower, explained how his company uses horse manure for electricity.
“We need only two centiliters of horse manure, so [a] very small amount is needed to charge a phone fully,” said Paalanen. “We’ve been using horse manure since 2015 and provided electricity to Horse Show since 2017,” he added.
It is reported that the 100 tonnes of manure collected during the event helped produce more than 150-megawatt hours of energy, not only for the Horse Show but also for homes in Helsinki. What a great way of creating energy. I think other countries, especially with a huge horse population should consider this as well.
