An amazing therapy program to recover veterans and retired racehorses has demonstrated to be one of the most amazing and at the same time effective. The therapy was initiated by men and women who are all veterans considering themselves people who are struggling a lot to adjust to the ‘civilian life’. “It’s not easy at all. Because they don’t teach you how to survive after you get out,” Air Force veteran Chris Timmer said of assimilating on the battlefield.
At first sight, it looks like the retired racehorses need these veterans more than the veterans need them but it is actually not true. A lot of these veterans have experienced Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and spending time with horses is a way how to get through it, that is why this program named “Heroes for Horses” gives them a lot of help mentally and allows them to deal with all the issues associated with this disorder.
“It feels like freedom. It’s hard to describe freedom. A horse lives in the moment. I have a hard time living in the moment. So he’s helped me live in the moment ” Timmer added. Another positive aspect of this is the reduction in the number of horses who were destined to slaughter.
Majority of retired racehorses usually are sent to a slaughterhouse but in this case “Heroes for horses” comes in extremely helpful. By saying all that, I think the amazingness of this program is defined by the reciprocity of it. Well done initiators.
