The relentless flooding in Louisiana and Texas has done more than just destroy property. It’s put hundreds of thousands of much-loved family pets at risk of falling victim to the rising waters. It should be noted that many of the families who “left their pets behind” were either blocked off from ever returning to their homes, or were forced to leave as quickly as possible in order to escape.
The decision to leave their animals behind must have been an awful one when forced to choose to save yourself and your family, so we shouldn’t judge these countless people too harshly. But as the waters began to rise, more and more animals were looking death in the face.
Many of the initial reports didn’t mention that the waters would get to such an unspeakably high line, so for many of their owners who assumed they would be safe on the high ground, it turned out that even then the animals were still at risk. A large number of horses were still tied to their posts as the water quickly crept their way. And soon enough, the poor animals were barely keeping their heads above water, quickly becoming exhausted and cold.
But that’s when a group of amazing humans rushed into the picture. Without a second thought, so many people put their lives at risk in order to lead the horses to safety. One of the men called the horses his “family,” and when you see the passion in his eyes, you’ll easily understand that he means it wholeheartedly. While it’s heartbreaking to know that so many of these beautiful animals were so close to drowning, it’s amazing to get the chance to witness just how amazing humans can be in times of great tragedy.
