Joan Sinclair, one of the region’s most devoted horse and cattlewomen, is still riding and mustering cattle in the bush at 83 years old. She has lived on the same property since she was a few weeks old. She has married and buried two husbands, and when asked about her current relationship with her two horses Joan says, ‘They’re a lot less trouble than men’.
Joan Sinclair would be the last person to think she is anything special but she is the symbol of a woman who doesn’t give up and goes on doing what she loves. She has been riding every day of her life and she doesn’t intend to quit. It’s amazing what she did when she was a kid as she rode a horse for 11 km to go to school every day and then got back home again on the back of the horse.
It seems that this passion hasn’t diminished as she now fattens cattle on her arm, doing the work herself and mostly on horseback. She rides two horses and, with her trademark humour, reckons it is a bit of an extravagance, “as I only have one bum”. She doesn’t consider that she is doing anything special because she is doing what she loves.
