In October 2016, 911 dispatcher Amy Neary was called to the scene of a crash on the interstate. About 30 horses were involved in the accident. They were being transported to a slaughterhouse. Of those 30 animals, several were injured and died.
But the lucky survivors were carted off to new homes, including one horse named ‘Hope.’ Amy named Hope after witnessing the terrible scene while comforting the mare and assuring her that everything would be OK. She took Hope home and adopted her — unaware that, at the time, she was five months pregnant.
Weeks later, the pregnancy came as a surprise. Amy couldn’t help but think about what could have been, yet Hope and her baby survived against the odds.n Amy has recently welcomed that foal. She named him Freedom, too! Talking about the tragedy and then seeing these two peacefully grazings in her barn, Amy can’t help but tear up.
She tells WBIR, “I wasn’t looking for another horse, but that night I knew I had to take care of her and, like horses and my stray cats, they all have a home here.” The two look safe and sound at home. Who knows what could have happened that night of the crash. Amy is just thankful she was able to save not just one, but two lives.
