The Percheron is a French equine breed, native to the province of Perche from which the breed is named. They usually have a gray or morello coat, they are very smart, calm and very muscular. Although their exact origins are unknown, the ancestors of the breed were present in the county until the seventeenth century. They were originally bred to be used in war.
Over time, they began to be used as carriage horses and for agriculture. Today the Percheron is equally comfortable under saddle and in harness. It is competitive on the horse-pull circuit, in which teams of horses are matched against ever-increasing weights. They are often crossed with light horse breeds such as Thoroughbreds to produce a sport-type riding horse.
