Larry and Peggy moved from Miami to Brown County months ago, built the facilities needed to care for the horses, including a large, clean, airy barn with stalls for the animals and began taking in the animals. They obtained most of them through their affiliation with Habitat for Horses, an equine protection organization.
They care for the horse out of their own finances but they hope this will change because they will grow and sell hay to help offset their expenses. Everybody loves to relax and takes things easy in their senior years but this senior couple doesn’t think like everyone does but they made plans and started taking care of horses in need. “We work on the psyche as much or more than we do the physical,” Larry said. They work each day to gain the animals’ trust.
The fruits of their efforts are seen in animals that, at one time, wouldn’t allow anyone to touch them, now they follow Larry and Peggy around the pasture, eating treats from their hands. “We make big pets out of them. We work very hard to keep them safe and happy,” Larry said. They have no regrets and they love what they do. In addition to that, both say that this is the best way to spend their money.
