1) Quarter horses come to mind as being the fastest sprint runner, however, they are not able to maintain that blazing speed past a quarter-mile. The breed has an interesting history. The Quarter horse has been added to many breeding programs for its prepotency abilities.
2) Arabians are also used for racing. They are best known for their speed and endurance. They are commonly used for endurance races. Very reactive horses, they do bond closely with their riders. Arabians have been bred for thousands of years and some have very old lineages.
3) There is a Mongolian horse, the Xilingol, that is reputed to be a very fast horse. It was bred on the Mongolian steppes in the 1960s for endurance racing. Not much is known about this new breed.
4) Surprisingly, Norwegian Fjord horses can exert a turn of credible speed when circumstances warrant it. Their powerful muscles and athleticism can be called upon in emergencies. They are used for marathon events and are even participating in endurance races and as cutting eventers.
5) Harness horses are pretty speedy characters if you stick to trotting or pacing. Standardbreds can perform these gaits depending upon training. They are a result of breeding Thoroughbreds with local horses and refining the results. Standardbreds are also used in racing.
