There are approximately 450 Newfoundland ponies alive today so as a lot of you may think every birth of the stocky small pony is very special. This the reason why Sarah Kean and her family are particularly thrilled to declare the birth of their newest foal. This filly is believed to be the fourth Newfoundland pony born this year.
She’s part of a public effort to keep the breed alive, and she’s joining a beloved herd with a long history. This breed is recognized for their dense coats and thick tails that allow them to live in harsh weather, these ponies are still endangered, but hopefully, things will change for better. Sarah Kean chose to contribute to the breed’s rebirth last year.
Her mare, Belle, became pregnant, and the family anxiously expected the arrival of her precious foal. The wait, however, wasn’t easy. Belle was pregnant for 11 months, and ss her due date neared, Kean and the rest of the family watched strictly for signs of labor. The expected due date passed but Belle still remained pregnant.
One morning, Kean decided to go check on Belle. She was looking for signs that the pony might go into labor but was left speechless when she saw that against Belle was a newborn filly. They decided to name the filly Salty, and a precise check found her to be healthy and happy. We are happy that everything turned out well and hopefully this birth will contribute to spread the word that these ponies are worth savings.
