Przewalski’s horse is a rare and endangered horse native to the steppes of central Asia. At one time extinct in the wild it has been reintroduced to its native habitat in Mongolia. In Mongolia, the last wild Przewalski’s horses had been seen in 1966 and since then they were never seen again.
This feral breed differs from the American mustang or Australian brumby, which descend from stray domesticated horses, the Przewalski’s horse has never been tamed. Thanks to the cooperation of different zoos in the world this breed is slowly making a comeback.
The Prague Zoo released four of these horses in their natural habitat in Mongolia after they had made a long journey by air and road. These horses will be assisted with water and hay and will get used to the land in a small enclosure before being completely released in the wild. They will then move to larger areas and be left completely free. Watch the video for more!
