Britain leaving the EU is one of the hottest topics of the last two years. When people talk about Brexit, the conversations lean towards the negative effects of such agreement, but when it comes to the Equine industry, it can be a positive thing.
Britain leaving the EU could be “an opportunity to make things better”, according to the Equine Industry. Kevin Needham, director of Newmarket-based BBA Shipping & Transport Ltd, believes Thursday’s (23 June) vote could mean benefits in terms of disease control.
Let’s hear his thoughts to understand how. “As happened to me recently, a horse came from Holland looking fine, then got here and started looking unwell. It was tested and it’s positive for [serious viral disease] Equine Viral Arteritis. So the government then says it has to be put to sleep or castrated.
Horses can come from anywhere in the EU without being tested as it’s a single market. That’s something we could change now. This could be an opportunity to make things better for UK horses.” Do you think this is actually a good idea? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
